Horse Breeds Available in SSO

Welcome to the Horse Breeds page of Jorvnal! I am Caroline Pinkhope, the author to this page. Here, I discuss information about all the horse breeds in Star Stable Online. There are currently 36 horse breeds in Jorvik and you are free to own as many as you like! All the breeds come in different colour variations which match the breed in real life, except for the breeds that are unique only to Jorvik: the Jorvik Warmbloods, the Jorvik Wild Horses and the Jorvik Ponies. Most horse breeds can be found around stables all over Jorvik but the majority of older models of breeds can be found at Ferdinand's Horse Market, which is a travelling market that appears in 4 different locations every fortnight, and you can find where they are on Star Stable news. Anyway, I hope that this page gives you all the information you've been looking for!

The breed has it's origins in the British Warmbloods introduced to North America by the colonists and pilgrims in the 1600. They were crossed with other breeds, such as the Chickasaw horse as well as more 'classic' breeds like the Arabian fullblood. SSO's Fact File: "This unusual pony has a truly mysterious and sad history. From the Assateague Island, spread across the two states of Maryland and Virginia in the USA, the Chincoteague has lived and developed in peace and freedom for many generations. How they got there in the first place is a mystery, but theory has it that today's Chincoteague are descended from the horses travelling upon a Spanish galleon which sank off the island in the 16th century.

Life on the island has never been easy. Not much grazing, terrible storms, and heavy inbreeding have all combined to almost eradicate the little population. Crossing the Shetland and Welsh ponies have strengthened the breed, and contributions from the public as well as efforts from the local fire brigade have all worked to make the Chincoteague strong and viable again. The Chincoteague still live wild on their island, but once a year they're gathered together and a select few colts are auctioned off. The proceeds from the auction go towards caring and protecting the herd."

12. Fjord

SSO's Fact File: "Few breeds are as recognisable and beloved as the intrepid Norwegian Fjord Horse. Combining the musculature of a draft horse with the nimbleness of small breeds, and with a silhouette that evokes prehistoric cave paintings, the Fjord Horse is a true icon in the Equestrian World! The Fjord Horse is amongst the breeds in the world. Findings in viking burial sites indicate that the Fjord and its closest relatives have been domesticated and selectively bred for over 2000 years. Today, all Fjords carry the dun dilution gene on any of the three base coats bay, black, and chestnut. A small number also show the influence of the cream gene, with the rarest variation of all, the "kvit" (Norwegian for white) possessing a double cream dilution. Most striking are their distinctive primitive markings - a dark dorsal stripe in the mane and tail, as well as stripes on the legs and withers. The Fjord is truly a jack of all trades. Sturdy enough for field work and forestry, it is also an excellent riding choice for leisure riding and competition. With it's mild temperament (you could even call them "bomb proof"!), the Fjord is also a popular choice for riding schools and therapeutic riding. These loveable companions won't falter under the toughest conditions, so whether your horse adventures take you to the icy cold of Dino Valley or the rugged trails of Mistfall, you can't go wrong with a Fjord!"

SSO's Fact File: "It was in the late 1300's that the Icelandic horse was first brought to Jorvik by one of Iceland's great horse breeders, Jokul Tómasson. Jokul had, together with his daughter Brynhildur, spent many years in the Ottoman Empire, working for the wealthy trader Asil Birdal. When the Ottoman Emperor Murad I died in the summer of 1389, Jokul and Brynhildur decided to leave. Since the 10th Century, it has been forbidden to return Icelandic horses to Iceland once they've already left, so Jokul and Brynhildur would have had to leave their beloved horses behind if they were to be able to return to their homeland. This could never be an option for them, and so they decided to take their horses to Jorvik one snowy, wintery day at the end of 1389.

The Icelandic Horse quickly became very popular amongst the islanders and are used today for both leisure riding as well as racing. Of all the wonderful qualities that make Icelandic horses unique, the most famous has to be it's special gait. In addition to the usual walking styles, the Icelandic horse also has a unique gait called the 'tölt'."

The Jorvik Pony's roots date back to the colonization of Jorvik, many centuries ago, when it played a key role in the settlement of the island. These sturdy and strong-willed ponies have played a major role in shaping Jorvik's rare character ever since. Jorvegians count on them as cherished companions, tireless co-workers, and reliable lawnmowers. This pony is an independent thinker, but loyal when it counts. Throughout the centuries the Jorvik Pony has been crossed with other breeds like the Icelandic, Shetland Pony, and Connemara to refine the attributes that made these ponies irreplaceable. The typical Jorvik Pony is short with sturdy, strong legs and a short, broad croup. Its deep, broad chest and muscular back make it an enduring riding pony. SSO's Fact File: "The Shire Horse is one of the biggest horse breeds in the world. With a height that can be over five and a half feet, they're majestic, but in spite of their size, they're known for their calm and friendly temperament. Even more characteristically, they're known for their heavy fetlock feathering. As well as being big, the Shire is also strong, and it's said to be able to pull up to five-and-a-half tonnes without struggling. This made the Shire a popular warhorse in the Middle Ages as it could carry a soldier wearing heavy armour. As knight's armour began to become unpopular, the Shire became more and more widely used as a workhorse. These days, the Shire horse is most used as a parade and draught horse."

33. Trakehner

SSO's Fact File: "The Trakehner (or "East Prussian Warmblood Horse of Trakehner Origin," as it is correctly called), is the lightest of the modern European warmbloods. Originally, the term Trakehner was reserved for horses bred at the stud farm in Trakehnen (now Yasnaya Polyana in Russia), where over two centuries the breed was refined and gained renown, first for use by the military and later in competition. In the final months of WWII, the devastation of war nearly wiped out the Trakehner bloodline. Those committed to saving the majestic breed led the remaining horses on a grueling exodus across the frozen wastelands of Eastern Europe, a feat of endurance that would give the Trakehner a legendary reputation, but nearly wiped out the remaining stock. After decades of careful breeding, the Trakehner was brought back from the brink of extinction. That discipline continues to this day as to be allowed into the official stud books, young horses undergo an extensive evaluation process to assess their qualities as riding horses. Due to their high percentage of Thoroughbred genes, the Trakehner is an elegant horse, and is frequently used to refine other warmblood breeds. Modern Trakehners are extremely successful in all areas of equestrian sports, especially eventing, where their versatility in both jumping and dressage makes them shine. Riders looking for a majestic partner in the riding hall or a friend to conquer through the toughest terrain, look no further than the Trakehner.

34. Welsh Pony

SSO's Fact File: "The wild horses which can be found on South Hoof are Welsh ponies which have lived freely on the rocky peninsula for hundreds of years. The Welsh pony is a small, durable and robust breed which can be found in all kinds of coat patterns except for pinto and patterns in the leopard complex group. Welsh ponies have a calm temperament which is appreciated by adults and children alike. In spite of it’s size, they’re brave, active and actually pretty good at jumping! The welsh pony is a very satisfying breed to work with, and there are very few areas in which it’s not an outstanding horse to use. It’s said that the Winterwell family were responsible for bringing the Welsh pony to Jorvik towards the end of the 18th century. At the time, South Hoof and the beach outside New Hillcrest were still connected but after the massive explosion known as ‘The Great Thunder’, the route to South Hoof was destroyed and the horses living there were separated from the Winterwell family. The Horses were soon forgotten and they built their own life in and around the cold, harsh landscape of the South Hoof Peninsula."

36. Zony

SSO's Fact File: "The Zony is a fantastical creature that can only be found at Ydris' Circus of Dreams. While it has many similarities to the Jorvik Pony it's based on, Ydris gave it a magical coat distinct from any naturally occurring pony. This seems to have also affected its characteristics somewhat, as it's even more headstrong than the Jorvik Pony and is particularly reluctant to jump through hoops. The transformation seemed to have had no affect on its appetite, and this little pony will gladly eat anything, given the opportunity, especially candy apples. The Zony was born from the wishes of many riders on Jorvik, and its testament to the powerful magic that unity can bring."
